Vaginal pimples

A shaved vaginal area is not unusual in women. Bumps or pimples in this zone are a common problem, especially after a few days of clean-shaven, ruining its aesthetic look. Fortunately, there are easy and effective ways to get rid of the commonly-known razor bumps.

What are the causes?

1. Ingrown hair

Pubic hair that grows in the wrong way (sideways or curls under the skin) after shaving forms a raised bump. As the hair continues to grow, the bump increases and becomes inflamed. This is most likely to happen if you have curly hair or shaved incorrectly, leading to pimples on the vaginal area after shaving.

2. Contact dermatitis

The vaginal area is very sensitive and reacts when something comes in contact. This is medically called contact dermatitis and appears as irritation of the skin. It may be caused by shaving against the grain and dry shaving. However, some creams, deodorants, soaps, or detergents that come in contact with this area could also be the cause of dermatitis.

3. Infection

If a pimple appears to be getting redder, more tender, or warm, it might be a sign of infection. Sometimes, the razor bumps can become infected, leading to a skin condition known as folliculitis. This condition is usually associated with red, swollen, and inflamed skin with pus-filled bumps. This may occur when bacteria or fungi attack the hair follicle. Microorganisms like to settle in dirty or moist razor blades and when shaving, enter the skin. Incorrect hygiene could allow bacteria and fungi to proliferate and cause infections. If you think you may have folliculitis, it's advisable to visit a doctor.

Get rid of them!

1. Home remedies

There are simple, easy and natural ways to reduce the annoying pimples on your vaginal area after shaving. Make sure to wash your hands before and after using these treatments.

  • Aloe vera
It has anti-inflammatory properties that accelerate healing and reduce pain. Gently apply aloe vera cream or softly rub a piece of aloe vera leaf over the irritated area. Allow it to dry before rinsing with cold water. This will help to ease discomfort and alleviate sensitive skin of razor burn on the vaginal area. Plus, it's excellent hydration for your skin.

  • Calamine lotion
It reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in the vaginal area after shaving. It will calm the symptoms of contact dermatitis and reduce the size of inflamed vaginal pimples. Apply it to the affected skin area twice a day.

  • Warm bath
You can apply a hot compress to the inflamed razor bumps on your vaginal area. This treatment increases blood circulation in the affected area in order to ease the swollen skin and heal faster.

  • DIY hack
This is a natural solution that you could do right at home. You need a couple of uncoated aspirin, water, and a cotton ball. Mix the aspirin with some water and as soon as it is entirely dissolved, dip the cotton in the solution and apply it to the affected area.

2. Prevention is better than cure

  • Shave the right way
Rather than shaving against the grain, shave in the direction of the hair growth. The look won't be as smooth, but you will keep the hair from growing in the wrong way, which causes ingrown hair and pimples on the vaginal area after shaving. Avoid dry shaving, as this will get your skin more irritated. Always use warm water and neutral soap during shaving time.

  • Avoid shaving too frequently
The more often you shave your vaginal area, the more chances your skin has to become irritated. Avoid shaving when razor bumps are still present or the irritation is not completely gone.

  • Pay attention to clothing choices
Tight jeans and underwear can rub against the vaginal area, irritating the surface of the skin and making razor bumps worse. Wear loose-fitting underwear and pants for a couple of days after shaving.

  • Try other hair removal methods
Hair removal creams and permanent solutions for hair growth are very effective. Laser hair removal is a surgical procedure that uses a beam of light to damage the hair to prevent future growth. It's expensive, but becoming more affordable and is a permanent solution for pubic hair and pimples in the vaginal area after shaving. Hair removal creams are another inexpensive but effective method.

Remember

Razor bumps may or may not appear after shaving, however, it's important to choose the preventative path. Shave correctly, keep your pubic area clean with neutral soap, and apply creams to reduce irritation after shaving. With these tips, you will keep a smooth, clean, and fresh vaginal area all the time.
